Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. The gums and bone tissue are responsible for holding teeth in place. As gum disease progresses from Gingivitis (Mild inflammation) to Periodontitis (infection and swelling) the gums and bone recede from around the teeth. The end result of gum disease is loose mobile teeth, which will eventually fall out. We utilize a variety of treatments to combat this problem starting with a perio exam to determine the extent of the disease around each tooth. We then scale the accumulated plaque, tartar or calculus from around the tooth surfaces, which is the cause of Gingivitis. More extensive surgery is necessary in some cases where the disease has progressed to the stages of Periodontitis. We utilize a variety of new products to dissolve the plaque and synthetic bone material to restore the support for loose teeth.
